The rule
Choose Konjunktiv II for its function and register. Common synthetic forms are natural; würde can avoid unclear or unusual forms without changing the intended time.
wäre · hätte · könnte · käme · würde kommen
Konjunktiv II can express an unreal situation, a cautious possibility, politeness or a reporting replacement; context determines its function.
Short forms wäre, hätte, könnte, müsste and sollte are common and usually clearer than long würde combinations.
Synthetic forms such as käme and gäbe remain useful; other forms may be literary or ambiguous with indicative preterite.

Common mistakes
Incorrect: Du müssten genauer erklären, was du meinst.
Correct: Du müsstest genauer erklären, was du meinst.
Second-person singular du takes müsstest.
Incorrect: Ich würde den Vorschlag geprüft.
Correct: Ich würde den Vorschlag prüfen.
würde combines with bare infinitive prüfen.
Incorrect: Wenn er geblieben wäre, hätte wir gesprochen.
Correct: Wenn er geblieben wäre, hätten wir gesprochen.
Plural unreal-past result uses hätten plus gesprochen.
Incorrect: Das lassen sich ändern.
Correct: Das ließe sich ändern.
Synthetic ließe plus sich expresses a hypothetical feasible change.
Incorrect: Sie sollen die Quelle nennen.
Correct: Sie sollte die Quelle nennen.
Singular sollte expresses advice in this context.
Details and useful distinctions
würde plus infinitive is an established alternative for many lexical verbs. It is not inherently incorrect or always less advanced.
Past counterfactuals use hätte or wäre plus participle; a present-looking form can still refer to a future hypothetical event.
