Counterfactual concession and excluded consequence

Use unreal concession, irrealis consequences and modal counterfactuals with distinct time reference.

The rule

Selbst wenn presents a condition that does not change the result. Tense and mood decide whether it is factual, possible or counterfactual.

selbst wenn … hätte … · zu …, als dass … könnte · ohne … wäre …

selbst wenn presents a condition that would not change the result. It can be factual, potential or counterfactual according to tense and context.

An unreal past concession uses past Konjunktiv II, while its result can be present or past.

zu plus degree expression and als dass often introduces an excluded possibility with Konjunktiv II.
