Precise passive alternatives and modality

Preserve obligation, possibility and agency when transforming passive sentences.

The rule

Match the intended modality when replacing a passive. Sein + zu can mean obligation or possibility; sich lassen typically expresses possibility.

muss … werden ↔ ist … zu … · kann … werden ↔ lässt sich …

sein plus zu-infinitive can express an obligation or possibility depending on context; it is not always equivalent to müssen.

sich lassen plus infinitive often expresses feasibility, not a duty: das lässt sich lösen.

An adjective in -bar can express possibility, but lexical meaning and idiomatic restrictions must be checked.
