Infinitive clauses and reductions

Avoid repetition with compact structures.

The rule

Use an infinitive clause only when its actor is recoverable from the construction. Ohne … zu expresses an absent action; statt … zu expresses a replacement.

zu · ohne … zu · statt … zu · same understood subject

Confirm that the main and infinitive actions share an understood subject.

Use ohne … zu for an absent accompanying action and statt … zu for an alternative not chosen.

Insert zu inside separable infinitives and before simple infinitives.
