Advanced relative clauses

Use dative, genitive, and prepositional relatives.

The rule

Take gender and number from the antecedent, but choose case within the relative clause. Keep required prepositions; use dessen or deren for possession.

dem/der/denen · dessen/deren · preposition + relative pronoun

Determine the pronoun's job entirely inside the relative clause.

Use dem/der/denen for dative and dessen/deren for possession.

A required preposition stands directly before the relative pronoun.
