Punctuation as structure and meaning
Use commas, semicolons and quotation boundaries to express clause structure and intended attachment.
The rule
Use punctuation to show structure, including both boundaries of an inserted clause. Distinguish separate infinitive clauses from integrated predicates before adding commas.
Nebensätze einklammern · Infinitivgrenzen · koordinierte Hauptsätze · direkte Rede
Frame an inserted relative or subordinate clause with two commas; one opening comma is not enough.
The 2024 clause-like infinitive rule requires commas, while bare word-group readings and integrated predicates have genuine exceptions.
A comma can clarify whether an adverb belongs to the main clause or the infinitive clause; punctuation can therefore change meaning.

Details and useful distinctions
A semicolon can separate closely related independent clauses. It is not a replacement for the required comma introducing an ordinary dependent clause.
Direct quotation punctuation follows whether the reporting clause comes before, after or inside the quotation; distinguish quotation content from outer punctuation.
Practise this grammar
Draw clause boundaries and attachment first. Choose punctuation from syntax, not from arbitrary breathing pauses.
