Restriction, explanation and alternatives
Limit a statement, explain a term and formulate alternative relationships without connector confusion.
The rule
Insofern, als limits the respect in which a claim applies. Use das heißt for explanation and beziehungsweise for the context’s alternative or corresponding relationship.
insofern, als … · außer dass … · beziehungsweise · das heißt
insofern, als introduces a respect in which a claim is valid; it does not necessarily give a straightforward cause.
außer dass can mark an exception to a statement. The exception clause keeps subordinate word order.
das heißt introduces clarification; punctuation and clause order follow the actual explanatory structure.

Common mistakes
Incorrect: Der Vorschlag ist insofern hilfreich, als er die Kosten senken.
Correct: Der Vorschlag ist insofern hilfreich, als er die Kosten senkt.
Singular er controls senkt in the explanatory als-clause.
Incorrect: Sie erklärt alles, außer dass sie die Quelle nicht nennen.
Correct: Sie erklärt alles, außer dass sie die Quelle nicht nennt.
Singular sie controls nennt at the exception clause end.
Incorrect: Die Sitzung wird verschoben, das heißt, sie findet später zu statt.
Correct: Die Sitzung wird verschoben, das heißt, sie findet später statt.
Separable stattfinden leaves statt in the right bracket.
Incorrect: Sowohl die Methode als auch das Ergebnis wird geprüft.

The two coordinated subjects normally take plural werden.
Incorrect: Er schreibt nicht nur klar, sondern auch präziserweise.
Correct: Er schreibt nicht nur klar, sondern auch präzise.
Two coordinated manner adverbs use parallel clearly/precisely forms.
Details and useful distinctions
beziehungsweise can coordinate corresponding alternatives, but overuse obscures whether you mean or, and, or a paired mapping.
entweder … oder and nicht nur … sondern auch need parallel elements of comparable grammatical function.
