Future in the past and reported perspective
Express later events viewed from a past point without importing automatic English tense shifts.
The rule
A past reporting verb does not automatically shift every reported tense. Express the future from the relevant past perspective and adjust time references accordingly.
er sagte, er werde … · am nächsten Tag wollte … · sollte später …
A past reporting verb does not require an automatic shift of every reported German tense.
Konjunktiv I werde plus infinitive can express an event later than the reported speaker’s reference point.
wollte can report a past intention; sollte can describe an anticipated or destined later event. These do not have identical meanings.
