Means, absence and replacement
Connect actions with indem, dadurch dass, ohne dass/zu and statt dass/zu.
The rule
Use indem or dadurch, dass for means. Ohne … zu marks an absent action and statt … zu a replacement; check who performs each action.
indem … · dadurch, dass … · ohne … zu … · statt … zu …
indem introduces a method or means, not simply a simultaneous action: man spart, indem man weniger verbraucht.
dadurch, dass makes the means or cause explicit through a correlate and finite clause.
ohne dass allows its own subject; ohne zu uses an understood actor recoverable from the construction.
