Mixed-time counterfactual conditions

Connect an unreal past condition to a present result without confusing their time frames.

The rule

Choose each clause’s time separately. A counterfactual past condition can have a present consequence: past Konjunktiv II in the condition, present Konjunktiv II in the result.

wenn … gemacht hätte, wäre … heute …

A counterfactual past condition uses hätte or wäre plus participle; a present result uses present Konjunktiv II.

An unreal present condition can also explain a past result. Choose each clause’s time independently.

Use time expressions such as damals, jetzt and heute to make mixed time relationships clear.
