Reported questions and requests

Embed yes/no questions, W-questions, instructions and requests in a report.

The rule

Report questions with ob or a W-word and final-verb order. Report requests with a suitable infinitive construction or an attributed modal, preserving the intended actor.

fragt, ob … / wann … · bittet, … zu … · sagt, er solle …

Report yes/no questions with ob and W-questions with their question word. Embedded questions have subordinate clause order.

An embedded question uses a full stop when the whole sentence is a statement; the outer sentence determines final punctuation.

Report instructions with sollen or an appropriate requesting verb, preserving who is expected to act.
