Ersatzinfinitiv and auxiliary position

Build perfect modal chains and place haben before a double infinitive in subordinate clauses.

The rule

A modal governing an infinitive usually stays infinitive in the perfect. In the subordinate double-infinitive pattern, finite haben precedes the infinitive pair.

hat arbeiten müssen · weil sie hat arbeiten müssen

When a modal governs another infinitive in the perfect, its infinitive usually replaces the participle: hat arbeiten müssen.

With no dependent infinitive, a modal can use its participle: das habe ich nicht gewollt.

In subordinate perfect clauses with a modal double infinitive, finite haben precedes the infinitive pair.

Core forms and structures

Use this table as a reference, then retrieve the forms without looking.

FormFunctionGerman exampleEnglish
müssenmüssen governs arbeiten, so its perfect uses an Ersatzinfinitiv.Sie hat länger arbeiten müssen. She has had to work longer.
könnenkönnen governs gehen, so use können rather than gekonnt.Wir haben früher gehen können. We have been able to leave earlier.
wollenwollen governs lesen, so its perfect uses wollen.Er hat den Bericht lesen wollen. He has wanted to read the report.
hat bleiben müssenFinite hat precedes bleiben müssen in this subordinate perfect.Ich weiß, dass sie hat bleiben müssen.I know that she has had to stay.
haben warten müssenFinite haben precedes warten müssen with plural wir.Sie sagt, dass wir haben warten müssen. She says that we have had to wait.

Incorrect: Er hat nicht kommen gedurft.

Correct: Er hat nicht kommen dürfen.

dürfen governs kommen, so use dürfen in the perfect chain.

Incorrect: Wir wissen, dass er gehen können hat.

Correct: Wir wissen, dass er hat gehen können.

Finite hat precedes gehen können in this subordinate perfect.

Incorrect: Das habe ich nicht wollen.

Correct: Das habe ich nicht gewollt.

With no dependent infinitive, gewollt is the appropriate participle.

Incorrect: Ihr habt die Aufgabe lösen gesollt.

Correct: Ihr habt die Aufgabe lösen sollen.

sollen governs lösen, so its perfect uses Ersatzinfinitiv sollen.

Details and useful distinctions

Keep the lexical infinitive before the governing modal: hat bleiben müssen, not hat müssen bleiben in the neutral taught pattern.

lassen also commonly uses an Ersatzinfinitiv with a dependent infinitive; perception verbs have construction-dependent variation.

Practise this grammar

Find three jobs: finite auxiliary, lexical infinitive, modal infinitive. Do not apply simple verb-final order blindly.
