Cohesion and reference

Link paragraphs with pronouns and connective adverbs.

The rule

Introduce a referent clearly before replacing it. Match noun pronouns by gender and number; use connectors to make the relationship between ideas explicit.

noun → pronoun/demonstrative · idea → da-compound/das · relation → connector

Introduce a referent clearly before replacing it with a pronoun.

Use demonstratives when ordinary pronouns would be ambiguous.

Use da-compounds to refer back to ideas governed by prepositions.
