Make polite, hypothetical, and unreal statements.
The rule
Use Konjunktiv II for hypothetical situations or polite distance. Wäre, hätte and modal forms are common; würde + infinitive works for many other verbs.
würde + infinitive · wäre/hätte/könnte/müsste/sollte/dürfte
Use würde + infinitive for most lexical verbs.
Prefer wäre, hätte, and common modal subjunctives over würde sein/haben/können.
An wenn-clause states the condition; the result clause uses another subjunctive form.
