A2 German grammar

um … zu and damit

Express purpose with the same or different subject.

The rule

Use um … zu when the purpose has the same understood actor. Damit has its own subject and a final conjugated verb; it also works when actors differ.

same subject: um … zu · different subject: damit + final verb

Compare the subjects of action and purpose before choosing the connector.

um opens the purpose phrase and zu marks the final infinitive.

damit introduces a subordinate clause with its own subject and final finite verb.
