The perfect tense
Choose haben or sein and build participles.
The rule
Choose haben or sein and form the past participle. Separable verbs often insert ge-; inseparable prefixes and verbs ending in -ieren do not add it.
haben/sein + Partizip II
Most verbs take haben; directed movement and change of state often take sein.
Regular, irregular, separable, inseparable, and -ieren verbs form participles differently.
The auxiliary is finite and the participle closes the clause.
