Dative prepositions

Use aus, außer, bei, mit, nach, seit, von, and zu.

The rule

Aus, außer, bei, mit, nach, seit, von and zu take the dative. Recognise contractions such as beim, vom, zum and zur.

aus · außer · bei · mit · nach · seit · von · zu + dative

These prepositions always assign dative. Add aus and außer to the A1 group and review all contractions.

aus expresses origin from inside or material; von often expresses a source, author, point, or possession without entry from inside.

nach names most cities/countries and 'after'; zu targets people, institutions, activities, and many services.
